Prototypes of NIF Neutron Time-of-Flight Detectors Tested on OMEGA

چکیده

Every large ICF laser facility, including Nova, OMEGA, and GEKKO, uses neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) systems to measure neutron yields and ion temperatures. Such nTOF systems are usually based on current-mode detectors consisting of a fast plastic scintillator optically coupled to a fast photomultiplier tube (PMT). A high-bandwidth transient digitizer records the signal. These systems, which are relatively inexpensive, have a large dynamic range and a fast time response. The nTOF detectors are reliable, and the information they record is fundamental to most ICF implosion experiments. It is for these reasons that the nTOF system was identified as a “core” diagnostic3 for the NIF.

Sensitivity of chemical vapor deposition diamonds to DD and DT neutrons at OMEGA and the National Ignition Facility.

The particle-time-of-flight (pTOF) detector at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is used routinely to measure nuclear bang-times in inertial confinement fusion implosions. The active detector medium in pTOF is a chemical vapor deposition diamond. Calibration of the detectors sensitivity to neutrons and protons would allow measurement of nuclear bang times and hot spot areal density (ρR) on a...

Development of nuclear diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility „invited..

The National Ignition Facility NIF will provide up to 1.8 MJ of laser energy for imploding inertial confinement fusion ICF targets. Ignited NIF targets are expected to produce up to 1019 DT neutrons. This will provide unprecedented opportunities and challenges for the use of nuclear diagnostics in ICF experiments. In 2005, the suite of nuclear-ignition diagnostics for the NIF was defined and th...

Neutron Detection with High Bandwidth and High Dynamic Range

A neutron diagnostic for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments was designed and fabricated that is suitable for both the OMEGA and National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser systems. The diagnostic measures the spectrum of fusion neutrons that are generated at peak compression. The neutrons are downshifted, or lose energy, as they escape depending on the areal density (ρr) of the imploded t...

A method for in situ absolute DD yield calibration of neutron time-of-flight detectors on OMEGA using CR-39-based proton detectors.

Neutron time of flight (nTOF) detectors are used routinely to measure the absolute DD neutron yield at OMEGA. To check the DD yield calibration of these detectors, originally calibrated using indium activation systems, which in turn were cross-calibrated to NOVA nTOF detectors in the early 1990s, a direct in situ calibration method using CR-39 range filter proton detectors has been successfully...

The coincidence counting technique for orders of magnitude background reduction in data obtained with the magnetic recoil spectrometer at OMEGA and the NIF.

A magnetic recoil spectrometer (MRS) has been built and successfully used at OMEGA for measurements of down-scattered neutrons (DS-n), from which an areal density in both warm-capsule and cryogenic-DT implosions have been inferred. Another MRS is currently being commissioned on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) for diagnosing low-yield tritium-hydrogen-deuterium implosions and high-yield DT ...
